such a mess…Boletus reminds me of my old metal file cabinet where I throw everything that doesn’t fit in my new cabinet with the plan in the back of my head “I’ll sort that out later”…

This does make sense morphologically BUT

with the genus Boletus being relegated only to species in the edulis clade, new genera will be springing up like, well, mushrooms…

the change of genus back to Boletus…

…is welcomed and overdue. This mushroom seems morphologically closer to the Boletus edulis group than the Xanthoconium affine group. I don’t know Roy’s opinion about this but I do know that soon after Xanthoconium seperans was published Ernst expressed doubts about the long term placement there. Also, in the Northeast, this mushroom seems to be either extemely polymorphic or a species cluster.
