Observation 74552: Xerocomus sclerotiorum A.E. Bessette, M.E. Smith, A.R. Bessette & H. Hitchcock nom. prov.

When: 2011-08-19

Collection location: Wharton State Forest, Burlington Co., New Jersey, USA [Click for map]

Who: I. G. Safonov (IGSafonov)

No specimen available

Yet another bicolor look-alike, unlikely to be identified. A single specimen growing under scrub oaks on a road bank. One thing for sure — this ain’t B. sensibilis based on the macrochemical tests.

For this and all other pics in this Obs.: taken with a Nikon, not my Fuji F700 workhorse, and without a flash. The countertop background is naturally dull yellow-brown, not pinkish-brown
Bluing is instant, but not very vivid
Staining of the context with 3% KOH (left half) and ammonia (right half)
