Observation 74553: Baorangia bicolor group

When: 2011-08-21

Collection location: Rancocas State Park, New Jersey, USA [Click for map]

Who: I. G. Safonov (IGSafonov)

No specimen available

What about this bicolor look alike?! The stipe is all red, with a orangish lightly reticulated apex; a faint boletus odor, but no curry aromas; bicolor-like texture of the cap context (dense and dry, but soft); essentially no bluing — just traces of blue on the stipal margins and the tubes; 3% KOH’s staining pileipellis yellow.

This is an old observation, from 5 years ago. The only reason I unearthed this obsies is because I visited this park again today with NJMA and I wanted to see what kind of boletes I found there before.
Unfortunately, this was not saved – at that time I couldn’t even image I would be getting involved in sequencing and the molecular phylogeny business of the Boletaceae, and I saw no reason to start a bolete herbarium. In retrospect it was a mistake because I used to find many interesting boletes.
I didn’t think at the time I still don’t think it’s B. bicolor in the strict sense. It just has a wrong “look and feel” for that species. Now, no one has really delineated the bicolor group or the sensibilis group in NA or globally, but we can agreee in that it resides somewhere in that “neighborhood”. :-)
Oh, you can see some fine reticulation right at the apex, maybe top 3-5 mm of the stipe (pix 3 & 4 from the top).

I don’t see the reticulation in these photos

Maybe the pore layer crawling down a tiny bit…

What makes you think it’s a lookalike and not part of the Baorangia group? And can you easily get it to Igor for further testing? I know you’re both in Jersey, though that isn’t saying much for convenience.
