I was referred here by some folks on the UBC Botanical Garden Forums for help with identifying this strange fungus. It’s on a bush outside my apartment in a highly urban area of Washington, DC on the east coast of the United States. It pops up suddenly and comes back even if knocked off the tree. It has done so twice now – once earlier this summer and once in the middle of August. It’s relatively hard, and it is difficult to break off the root it’s attached to. It has no smell. Please let me know if you need any more information, and thank you for your time!
