Observation 7644: Morchella elata clade

When: 2008-05-22

Collection location: Edgewood Blue, Wells Gray region, British Columbia, Canada [Click for map]

Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)

Specimen available

(This observation refers to the three particularly conical ones on the bottom of the photo.)

This form is much less common around here than the others (which I’m now calling M. brunnea). It differs in the following ways:

thinner, softer, more fragile flesh
narrower, straighter, finer ridges
redder color
margin of cap essentially continuous with stalk
cap shaped more conic and always distinctly sharp-pointed
odor always significantly stronger (other is mild to odorless)

Species Lists

I’ve been calling the top ones are M. brunnea, the bottom ones ???, and the side ones M. esculentoides or M. prava.
