These images were taken in an area that is little known about. It is a small protected heritage (Cedat Tree) forest that the local ranger told me about. This is the first time I have seen these fungi and believe them to be mirabilis.

Recognized by sight: Altho it is certainly a bolete, it is highly unlikely that it is in the genus Boletus, hence the return to a more general Fungi sp. designation. I just sent a note to Dr. Roy Halling, who has done field work on this group in Australia…perhaps he can help us out with a name.

Recognized by sight: Dr. Roy Halling did, at least, saying that Austroboletus was a strong possiblity. He also stated that there are at least seven species within this genus in Australia, and it is impossible to ID to species without more details.
Please collect it next time, Ian! I am trying to find you a local key…

Thanks Deb. Appreciate all the help and guide lines I can get. Also replied to Karl.S. Hope to load some more interesting images in the next few days.

If this is mirabilis, then our West Coast version is Boletus mundanus! Gorgeous little guy! Peaked cap not typical of boringly normal B. mirabilis material, but the cap color is pretty spot on! Wild stipe ornamentation, too…almost looks like some sort of gleba on there, ala stinkhorns…
gotta love those Australian fungi!

This looks like a good location for a future “meeting of the minds” Australian foray! Put me down on the guest list…

What a marvellous little mushroom! I have no idea what it is, but it certainly would have deserved the name mirabilis better than the one that has it.
