Recognized by sight: lots of these, in beautiful shape, in veins throughout the fir forest.
Based on chemical features: delicious! not at all waterlogged. sauteed in butter, shallots and a touch of salt: best of show for Breitenbush culinary demonstration (including chanterelles, Sparassis, Hericium, Sulphur Shelf, Boletus mirabilis).

Recognized by sight: P. multiplex is a complex of 5 species of which 3 occur in western NA: P. atrolazalunis, marymargaratae and purpureoniger.
