Observation 81632: Spongipellis unicolor (Schwein) Murrill

When: 2011-10-28

Collection location: Wharton State Forest, Burlington Co., New Jersey, USA [Click for map]

Who: I. G. Safonov (IGSafonov)

No specimen available

This interesting “polypore” was growing on a young scrub oak. It’s 2.75" wide, 2" deep and 1.6" thick, and weighs no more than half ounce. As can be seen from the pictures, the surface is very tomentose, and the pores are very large and irregularly shaped. I couldn’t find a visual match in any of my books.
