I think you’re right. This just doesn’t look like most L. velutinus I’ve seen, but a lot of characters check out. I think the seemingly wider-than-usual gill spacing it what’s throwing me.

I think this is Panus velutinus, you got work Lechner et al. 2005?
Lechner, Bernardo E., J. E. Wright & O. F. Popoff. Hygroaster iguazuensis sp. nov. and a new continental record for Lentinus similis. Mycotaxon 91: 9-14. 2005.

The gills do not look marginate to me

the gills in the first image look marginate. if they are, that ought to narrow down the options. the mycobank descriptions of both P. fulvus and P. similis make no mention of that character being present.

can you confirm or deny this, Alan?
