but I get the feeling that just about every yellow discoid asco, here on MO and elsewhere, all to often gets dubbed B. citrina without a second thought. Comb through a site like Helotiales.nl or Ascofrance.fr and you’ll find how absolutely crucial microscopy is to settling on species IDs, much less genus, given how similar macroscopic appearances can be. Eyeballing these by macro alone with popular names is an ugly habit, and one I’m as guilty of as anyone. Not every Scutellinia is scutellata, not every Xylaria hypoxylon or polymorpha, not every Lycogala epidendrum, etc., etc.

I’ve tried twisting arms over at AscoFrance to get some of their folks over our way to help sort through all the asco mess, but so far no bites. Hopefully the more we post over there, the more they’ll post/propose over here. In the meantime, let’s all try to do our asco homework, at least those of us with microscope access.
