Mixed hardwood – pine forest. This was fruiting on a log that was very decomposed. Perhaps a dead Virginia pine.

observation similar to this of an agaric with a tiered/split cap which the observer thought might be a species specific characteristic. i can’t find it now, but I’d venture to guess they might be the same thing. it too was an east coast/mid-west observation.

I know where the log is and can check it periodically in case it fruits again. I’ll know to get underside photos in future. Also spore prints.

I can’t recall ever seeing something like this before.
