sigh. another day, another name change…

IMHO, naming is good hypothesis driven science. A name is published (like describing a new species for example) and it would be a hypothesis proposed by that describer based on sound tenets of that science (hopefully). Other folks test that hypothesis by collecting and examining the organism, comparing it to others and generally noting whether all information about that organism fits the working criteria at the time. If it doesn’t fit, the hypothesis is revised (placed in another genus for example). At one time, the Fly Agaric was placed in Agaricus.
