We haven’t been too careful about names in the lichen half of MO

I notice the mushroom side is very good about explicitly applying the new names for old observations. Since MO handles synonymy, it’s not such a big deal to me. On the other hand, in the case of names like Punctelia subrudecta, we really should be updating old observations — that species doesn’t actually even occur in North America at all, as it turns out.

There has been a name change for this lichen. What we all knew and loved as Cryptothecia rubrocincta is now called Herpothallon rubrocinctum, according to the latest Esslinger checklist.
