Although I would have expected both to occur in that area, it seems soredica is relatively rare in northern California. See the range maps in Brodo et al. 2001, for example. Also Jovan & McCune 2004 report flaventior in 43% of plots in the central valley versus soredica in only 1.5%; and flaventior in 1.7% of the plots in the northern coast range versus 0% for soredica. Checking my database of CALS checklists, it is equally clear that soredica is very rare in northern California, while flaventior is reported regularly from virtually all over the state. Outside of southern California, my sources indicate that soredica has only been reported from Sutter Buttes, Pinnacles, Santa Cruz county, and near Lakeport. (Embarrassingly, CNALH shows one odd outlying record in Humboldt County — mine! Almost certainly a misidentification.)

In other words, we better be extra sure it really is soredica before betting the house on it! :)

looking closer to F. soredica to me, I also picked up another specimen from the same area which I will upload later which I think is looking more like F. flaventior.

Either F. flaventior (conspicuous white markings on the upper surface, soredia both marginal and laminal, typically more coastal) or F. soredica (subtle white markings, soredia mostly marginal, typically more inland). Intermediate specimens can be difficult to distinguish. Chemistry doesn’t help.
