Observation 9140: Sarcodon Quél. ex P. Karst.

When: 2007-10-14

Collection location: Larch Mountain, Multnomah Co., Oregon, USA [Click for map]

Who: Daniel B. Wheeler (Tuberale)

No specimen available

The scales on the cap that I normally associated with this genus are not present on this specimen. Sort of. And the cap is much darker than other Strobilomyces I have seen in the past. It could be because the area had already had a frost, and the colors were degraded; or perhaps there is a parasitic fungus growing on it I am unaware of. At any rate, the slugs seemed very happy with it. Growing with Western hemlock, Noble fir, scattered Red alder, and Douglas fir at about 2800 feet elevation.
