Observation 93434: Tyromyces P. Karst.

When: 2012-04-27

Collection location: Frances Slocum State Park, Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dave W (Dave W)

No specimen available

On a lawn nearby a wood border I noticed this just lying on the ground. There was a Black Cherry tree nearby. But this thing was just lying there, not attached to anything. At first I thought it was just a piece of foam rubber. But the cross section reveals a layer of tubes attached to white context. Context and tubes moist and spongy.

I’m taking the V shaped gouge on the fruit body as an indication that a large bird mistook this polypore for a mouse, before dropping it onto the ground. A lot of hawks travel through this area.
