Observation 9348: Amanita banningiana Tulloss nom. prov.

When: 2008-08-12

Collection location: Babcock State Park, Fayette Co., West Virginia, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dan Molter (shroomydan)

No specimen available

Here is a golden-brown Caesar mushroom from Babcock State Park. This mushroom was photographed within shouting distance and on the same day as the mushrooms in observation 9075.

This one is far more brown than red, and the annulus is the same shade of yellow as the gills.

I think the color changes are a normal part of this kind of mushroom’s development. The egg emerges from the vulva a tomato red-orange, lightens to bright yellow around the margin as the cap opens, and then fades to a golden brown. Meanwhile, the annulus starts off white but becomes yellow as the mushroom ages.

These photos are straight from the camera without resizing or color/level adjustments.
