When I picked up the branch the held them, the whole fruiting body (photo #3) sort of convulsed as if touched with a cattle-prod. The air around them was immediately filled with gray spores – which quickly dispersed. It definitely had the look of a startle-reflex. But that is probably a bit anthropomorphic…,
Huge spores – is that typical of Ascos?
