Observation 9635: Phaeolus schweinitzii (Fr.) Pat.

When: 2008-08-18

Collection location: Madison Heights, Pasadena, California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)

No specimen available

Any guesses as to what this will turn into? There was a “slime trail” around it at first, so I thought maybe slimemold, but then these pores started to develop. I’m praying the gardners will spare it until it matures!

September 1 update: it is beginning to grow a varnished surface, suggestive of Ganoderma lucidum. I’ve seen several other specimens of G. lucidum appear on various trees around Pasadena in the last few weeks, too. It seems when it grows from damaged roots it starts with poofy cloud-like form like this. When it grows horizontally from cracks in trunks, then it grows the standard stem and varnished cap nearly right from the beginning. I’ll get some photos of this one in the coming weeks when it becomes better developed.
